How often will my child receive Spanish class? All classes, 1st-5th, have Spanish 3 times per week for 30 minutes.
What is taught during class? Please see the curriculum overview page for an overview of the program and the units covered.
Will my child be fluent at the end of the program? Fluency is not the goal of the Elementary Spanish Program. Students are expected to be able to talk about themselves, their family, their likes and dislikes, and describe everyday items by the end of elementary Spanish. We will focus on listening, speaking, writing, and cultural experiences. Classes are taught in Spanish and students are encouraged to speak in Spanish as often as possible. The curriculum often reinforces what students are learning in science, language arts, and social studies.
What can I do to help my child learn at home? Taking a few minutes a week to ask about Spanish class, review homework or other materials sent home, and encouraging your child to do his or her best will send a message that learning another language is important to you. My website also links to fun, computer-based games to play and other ways to extend learning.
What if I don’t speak any Spanish? Although you may not feel confident checking your child’s work, you can learn a little Spanish and have fun finding out what your child knows!
