Holidays/Birthdays/Celebrations

  • Holiday Room Parties

Halloween, Winter Holiday and Valentine’s Day are the three regularly scheduled classroom parties each year. Grade level representatives selected by the Parent-Teacher Organization are usually in charge of these parties. To learn more about activities sponsored by Captain School’s Parent-Teacher Organization, please refer to the Parent-Teacher Organization section of this handbook.

    Birthdays

Birthday treats are permitted for children in all grades. When treats are planned they should always include one treat per person in the child’s classroom. This treat is not a requirement. A note or phone call to the teacher a day or two before the birthday would be appreciated.

St. Louis County Department of Health recommends that food for parties and other social functions is “limited to commercially prepared, individually packaged treats”.

Balloon bouquets, flowers, etc. delivered to school for birthdays and other celebrations present problems of equity for our children and disrupt the purposeful atmosphere we work to maintain at school. Our preference is for parents to reserve such activities for home. If balloon bouquets, etc., are delivered to school they will be kept in the office. The child to whom they are sent may come down to see them when they have a break in their classroom activities and take them home at the end of the school day. While we appreciate the parents desire to celebrate special occasions we would prefer that such celebrations be limited to treats that are fairly simple and that everyone can share. Invitations for birthday parties may be distributed at school only if the entire class is invited.
