- Process for Earning the Seal of Biliteracy at CHS
-
The dates change slightly from year to year, but here is the basic process for earning the Seal of Biliteracy.
Promotion/Notification - In mid to late October, World Language teachers will discuss the Seal in their classes and reach out to any students who may have already passed their proficiency exams. In addition, announcements will be made school-wide for about a week. Notification will also typically be sent out to parents in the building newsletter.
Application Deadline - The sign up will open in late October and will close in the 2nd week of November (date subject to change). The sign-up deadline this year will be Nov. 8, 2024.
Requirements Review - The Seal administrators will check that all applicants are seniors and then will then ascertain what tests, if any, each student still needs to take in order to qualify for the Seal. They will also check that each student has successfully demonstrated the required level of English proficiency according to state guidelines.
Testing & Retesting - Most students will need to test in order to earn the Seal. Testing of seniors will take place in late January into February. The administrators will reach out with test schedules early in the 2nd semester.
Assessment Review - The Seal administrators will verify that applicants have successfully demonstrated proficiency or advanced proficiency in the world language(s) of their choice. This will be done in early March as soon as scores are received.
Sociocultural Competency - Students who have demonstrated proficiency in both English and at least one other language will be invited to write the essay that we use at CHS to assess sociocultural competency. The one-page essay may be written in English.
Awards Ceremony & Graduation - Students who have qualified for the Seal of Biliteracy will be honored at both the awards ceremony and on the graduation program.
