    TEAM INFORMATION:

    You will receive a monthly email from our team regarding important team and subject information. If you do not receive a team newsletter by the end of September, please reach out to Mrs. Kavanaugh, as we may not have your correct email on file.  

     

    HOMEWORK 

    Although most daily homework will be posted in Google Classroom, large or long-term assignments and some daily work will only be recorded by your child in their paper planner.  Your student MUST have a planner that they bring and use daily to write assignments and deadlines. Their core teachers will always give time in class for your child to write assignments in their planner.  Please check the planner at home for the first few months of school to help your child develop and sustain the habit of using it.  The planners will be available for purchase ($5) but might be delayed in shipping.  If they do not arrive in by the first day of school, we will provide temporary planners in the meantime.  

     

    GRADES

    Grades will be posted on PowerSchools.  Details about grades and grading policies will be shared at Open House.

    AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

    Most after-school activities begin after Labor Day.  Activities booklets describing the various options will be posted on the Wydown website in the coming weeks.  

     

    6th Grade Camp

    We look forward to welcoming your 6th Grade students to Wydown in a few weeks, when we see them on the first day of school, August 21, 2023. We are writing to share about 6th Grade Camp, a Wydown tradition for over sixty years.

     

    Sixth Grade Camp will take place from Tuesday, October 3, 2023, to Friday, October 6, 2023. This is an overnight camp experience in which we use the facilities at Sherwood Forest for our four-day, three-night stay. Students will board buses on Tuesday morning, at 8:30 AM, and return on Friday between 3:30 - 4:00 PM.

     

    At 6th Grade Camp, students will engage in team-building and cabin activities to get to know other 6th graders, problem-solve, and create a shared story of experience. Over the course of the four days, they will also participate in Camp-based activities, like Archery, Climbing, Canoeing, and a day trip to nearby Johnson Shut-Ins State Park for exploration of rock formation, rivers and waterways.

     

    Three meals, plus snacks, are served each day in the dining hall. All meals are eaten family-style, with accommodations precautions for allergies and food-sensitivities. Camp is staffed and supervised by Wydown and district staff, a full-time nurse, Clayton High School 10-12 graders, and assisted by Wydown 8th graders.

     

    The fee for 6th Grade Camp will be $275. This covers travel, lodging, meals, t-shirt, craft supplies, and Sherwood staffing fees for the week. There are some scholarship funds available on a limited basis. Additionally, if you would like to contribute to scholarship funds, we have options to round up to help other families.

     

    One request we have, before the school year begins: please fill out THIS FORM by August 4, 2023, to let us know your child’s t-shirt size. This will allow us to place the order in a timely fashion and have all of our shirts arrive in time for Camp. Thank you!

     

    We realize the transition to middle school can be a daunting one, and we know that 6th Grade Camp can be part of that feeling. We have also discovered that the experience creates memories and bonds that last well beyond the Camp week and believe in its capacity to create those connections. There will be a family information session during the first few weeks of school.     ELECTRONICS

    In addition to their Chromebooks, students can bring cell phones to school -- with some restrictions.  Any student bringing electronic devices to school is responsible for following school and team policies, and for protecting the safety of the item.  

    • Cell phones are to be OFF and in backpacks during the school day. Call the school office (314-854-6400) if you need to reach your child with an emergency message, particularly a change of after-school plans.

     

    SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT

    All incoming sixth graders were asked to choose a book to read over the summer and complete a short assignment. The assignment was to be submitted through an online form.  If your child has not completed the assignment - don’t worry!  They still have time.  We will accept the assignment late:)  Click on THIS LINK to access the Google Form and instructions.
