Among the texts we will explore this year are Shakespeare's Othello, The Bible As/In Literature, Wright's Black Boy, Salinger's Catcher in the Rye, Orwell's 1984, and O'Brien's The Things They Carried. These texts will encourage us to explore the following questions:
How does the individual fit into a greater society? At what point must an individual think, speak, and act for oneself? What is the nature of Good? Of Evil? Under what circumstances is it useful to think in terms of absolutes? What circumstances require a sense of relativity? What does a reader gain by exploring difficult issues through the eyes of another?
Students should be prepared to participate each day.
As a conferenced English class, this course includes nine essay conferences this year. In addition, students are required to read 350 pages each quarter independently.
