    Standard 2 Narrative:

Although the majority of staff and parents surveyed feel that our Board of Education operates responsibly and functions effectively, a significantly lower percentage of stakeholders feel the governing body consistently protects, supports and respects the autonomy of school leadership.

Over the past three years, our District has engaged in a challenging budget review. A committee of community members, staff and administrators conducted a comprehensive review of District expenditures and helped to shape recommendations for budget reductions. This collaborative process led to the approval of $1.6 million in permanent reductions to the 2013-2014 school year budget. These reductions, combined with the $935,000 reduced from the 2012-2013 budget, will provide the District with additional financial stability, allowing it to remain above its 18% fund balance goal for an additional year and a half.

It is significant that these reductions have had minimal to no effect on student learning. The fact that average class sizes across all disciplines have not grown and the vast majority of student performance data provide strong support to the claim. At the same time, the difficult conversations and resulting decisions have had an impact on staff morale and perceptions of trust in our governing body and district administration.

Our stakeholder surveys clearly communicate a hallmark of our culture which is an expectation of academic excellence. This perception as reported by our parents, staff and students is impressively high, perhaps more impressive is the close alignment of this perception by the stakeholder groups.
