    Special Days and Celebrations 

     
    Halloween:  On October 31 children dress up in Halloween costumes and go from door to door asking for treats. Parents buy or make the costumes.  Elementary students are asked to bring a costume to school for the party or parade.  Classroom teachers will share details about the party.

     Thanksgiving: Thanksgiving is an American holiday celebrated on the 4th Thursday in November.  On that day, families eat together and remember the Pilgrims and Native Americans sharing a meal in 1621.

     Winter Break:  Many religious holidays are celebrated during this time of the year.  Jewish families celebrate Hanukkah, Christians celebrate Christmas and some African American families celebrate Kwanzaa.  Students will learn about these special holidays in EL class.

     Valentine's Day: Students give cards to classmates and teachers on Valentine's Day, February 14.  It is a fun way to express friendship.  Valentine's cards can be purchased in Walgreens, Target or most stores. 

     Sleepover:  Children sleep at a friend’s home.  This is often done for a birthday celebration.  Children should bring a toothbrush and PJs.  If you or your child is not comfortable staying overnight you may pick him/her up later in the evening. 

      Birthdays:  Students often celebrate a birthday with a planned party at home or another place.  Invitations may be sent in the mail or on email. Gifts are given to the birthday child.  Most families spend $10-20 for a gift.
