• 6th Grade Literacy Syllabus

     

    Literacy is a literature class with a strong emphasis in written expression.  We will read a large amount of material in and outside of this class. Outside reading is expected and will be assigned for homework. Students will also learn how to organize, write, and revise pieces across multiple genres. As a responsive teacher, I often change plans to adapt to the needs of my classes. Below is the *tentative* plan for each quarter.

     

    Quarter 1: 
    • Literature Study: Short stories, independent novel

    • Literature Skill Focus: Intro to Fiction I--Elements of Fiction, Methods of Characterization 

    • Writing Pieces: Narrative, formal email

    • Writing Focus: “Show, Not Tell” sensory language, formal tone, basic mechanics

     

    Quarter 2: 
    • Literature Study: Bamboo People by Mitali Perkins, Non-fiction articles

    • Literature Skill Focus: Notice & Note, dynamic character development, conflict, plot Writing Pieces: CER literary analysis

    • Writing Focus: Citing evidence to support claims, formatting quotations, summarizing

    • Projects: Book Project 1: Characterization

     

    Quarter 3: 
    • Literature Study: Adversity Novel Book Clubs, non-fiction articles

    • Literature Skill Focus: Symbolism, theme, conflict as a catalyst of change

    • Writing Pieces: Theme literary analysis

    • Writing Focus: Writing a multi-paragraph essay, effective thesis statements, transitions

    • Projects: Book Project 2: Plot 

     

    Quarter 4: 
    • Literature Study: Poetry, Book Clubs 

    • Literature Skill Focus: Figurative language, developing a theme through symbolic language 

    • Writing Pieces: Words of the Wiser poem

    • Writing Focus: Writing with figurative language, developing extended metaphors

    • Projects: Book Project 3: Comprehensive literary analysis
